Corporate
Fitness:
Embracing
the Future of Employee Retention

No longer is the success
of a corporation a defining factor for today’s super stars when it
comes to selecting a company they wish to devote their talents
to.

The future of business
will be in how well a company sees the list of workers not as
numbers: but as individuals.
Adding a corporate fitness
program that goes beyond offering a discount at a fitness gym is the
new direction for creating better health benefits.
This type of programming
has the direct capability of attracting employees who are currently
not living healthy lifestyles, who are frequently injured and have a
higher percentage of sick days.
The real focus of a
corporate fitness initiative should be on employees who lack the
motivation and direction to walk into a gym and purchase a
membership.
By offering in house
fitness and wellness programs you are eliminating the cost of
supplying memberships to those who are already fitting the ideal for
optimum fitness. You are now directly reaching out to those
employees who are ultimately affecting the bottom line when speaking
in terms of health care and WCB claims.
We have carefully designed classes that
encourage participation for all levels of fitness. Some take place
directly in the working environment and require as little as 10
minutes; there is no need for special clothing which can be
embarrassing for some employees.
Office
YOGA and other relaxation classes that promote both stress relief
and flexibility E with a target focus on muscle aches and pains
that are job related. In this class participants receive clear
instruction and are guided through a series of simple movements that
take place while seated in a chair. There is no special equipment or
clothing required for the office yoga.

We also offer a wide
variety of mat classes that involve exercises designed to target
core and postural muscles, ideal for those with sedentary job
descriptions. We supply all of the equipment needed at each
individual class. ideal for those with sedentary job descriptions.
We supply all of the equipment needed at each individual class.
Our GI Series of boot camps have a strong focus on motivation, core
muscles and are geared specifically to those who are not already gym
savvy. This will be a new addition in 2007 that will round out our
list of our extensive corporate programming.

Workers' calls for
help dealing with stress are up more than 40% from a year ago
.
If you work and
are spending one third to one half of your day in an office setting
then those surroundings are as important to your overall sense of
satisfaction and ability to handle stress; as those in your home.
Although we
usually have little control over the buildings we work in, having
management that is aware of problems that can affect us may
encourage the creation of a motivating and encouraging
environment.
The
relationships between the health of employees and their physical and
social environment at work, home environment, personal health
practices, and their personal resources for health have been
examined through needs assessments gathered as part of the Workplace
Health System—a comprehensive approach developed by Health Canada to promote workplace health.

STRESS ARISING FROM
THE SOCIAL ENVIRONMENT
Social
environment at work
The social
environment encompasses aspects of social interactions and corporate
culture. These include interpersonal relations, management
practices, the amount of change inherent in employees, jobs, job
demands, and the sense of personal control that employees have over
their jobs. As shown many employees are either somewhat or very
concerned with:
-
job demands (52%);
-
job-related changes (33%);
-
management practices (28%);
-
lack of job control (25%);
-
interpersonal relations (18%); and
-
other aspects of the social environment at work (29%).
Lack of regular
activity is the most prevalent
lifestyle risk factor; over 40% of employees admit to being active
fewer than three times a week; Smoking cigarettes is also prevalent,
being reported by 24% of employees; heavy alcohol use occurs among
20% of employees; and
45% of employees use
medication, with the most frequent prescribed medication being used
to reduce pain
Building
healthier workplaces
Workplace
health promotion programs can be both health and cost
effective. Recent studies show that when the physical
and social environments at work are less of a cause for concern
employees tend to have better emotional and physical
health.
